What to Pack for a Hiking Trip (including Free Printable Packing List)
Are you planning a hiking trip? I always seem to run around like a crazy person the night before I leave for a trip, and I always worry I’ve forgotten something, so I decided to make a whole list of everything I need–and I’m sharing it here with you! This post will walk you through everything you need to pack for a hiking trip, including a peek inside what I take for a day trip in warm weather and a free printable packing list for you to use for your own trips!
What to Pack for a Hiking Trip

Clothing
- Bottom t-shirt or layer – consider my friend’s Adventure Awaits t-shirt!
- Wicking underwear / long-underwear
- Socks
- Sun hat
- Bandana
- Insulating hat (if cold weather)
- Insulating layer (if cold weather)
- Gloves (if cold weather)
- Rain Jacket and pants (if raining)
Gear
- Backpack – I’ve been rocking my hydration pack recently
- Hiking boots or shoes – I wear something similar to these and like them
- Watersport sandals (if needed) – I have a pair of Teva’s I bought ten years ago and still unironically love
- Binoculars – consider these
- Trekking poles – everyone Amazon recommends these
Skin and Body Protection
- Sun screen – I prefer carrying this non-spray sunscreen with me
- SPF-Rated Lip Balm – like this
- Sunglasses – these are my current favorite outdoor sunglasses
- Poncho or rain shell – here’s what I wear
- Space blanket – like this
- Bug spray- I like the idea of all-natural bug repellent, but I prefer how the stuff with DEET actually works
Electronics
- Cell phone and waterproof case
- Camera and accessories
- GPS
- Two-Way Radios
Emergency Supplies
- Knife or multi-tool – here’s what I carry (also included in the Road Trip Soul Outdoor Survival Kit)
- First-aid kit – I carry something similar to this
- Fire Starting kit – consider the Road Trip Soul fire starter kit!

- 2 itineraries – 1 with a friend and 1 under your car seat
Navigation
- Map
- Compass – here’s mine
Food and Hyrdration
- Enough food for the day, plus extra (just in case)
- Water bottle – I’ve been digging these vacuum-insulated water bottles recently
- Water purification tablets – here are what I carry (also included in the Road Trip Soul Outdoor Survival Kit)
Toiletries
- Toilet paper
- Menstrual products
- Trowel (if needed)
- Hand Sanitizer
