5 Things to Know About Pedernales Falls State Park

Pedernales Falls | Road Trip Soul

Planning a trip to Pedernales Falls State Park? Pedernales Falls is one of the most beautiful parks in the Lone Star State, but there are definitely some things I wish I had known before my recent trip out there. This post will share five important things for you to know about Pedernales Falls State Park to help make your trip absolutely unforgettable.

Check out my video of my recent adventures in Pedernales Falls State Park:

1. You probably won’t have reception, so download everything you’ll need ahead of time.

Once I pulled into the camp site, I lost all cell reception and had to rely on the media I had downloaded to my phone and a park map during my stay. Definitely a #firstworldproblem, but it’s still something to be aware of ahead of time.

2. If you’re camping in Pedernales Falls State Park, plan to gather your gray water and dispose of it.

You’re not allowed to just dump your gray water in the camp ground due to fire ants. I had an extra gallon jug to gather my gray water in, but I didn’t have a funnel, which definitely would have helped.

3. You’re not allowed to gather firewood in the campground.

If you want a campfire while you’re staying in the park, bring your own firewood with you.

4. Pedernales Falls Trail System is beautiful but SLIPPERY.

Walking along the trails is an amazing experience. The rock face has been carved into channels and dips that are so much fun to explore, but be careful! I slipped about five or six times, and I fell right on my butt once. I also saw a kid face plant, which looked and sounded like it hurt.

5. Trammel Crossing Trail isn’t worth the hike.

It’s a fairly easy hike, but it’s also five and a half miles through mostly flat shrub area with only one underwhelming vista. You’ll also spend about a third of the trail walking along a barbed wire fence. If you’re looking for a way to kill a couple of hours and get your steps in, that’s one thing, but if you’re only in town for a day, maybe skip Trammel Crossing Trail.
